This weekend, I’m going to be part of a great lineup of writer-performers, presenting an original piece for Paper Machete, a new “living magazine” show curated and hosted by my friend Christopher Piatt.
I like Christopher Piatt because he was the theater critic at TimeOut Chicago for a long time and once put my name under the “They Wuz Robbed” section after that year’s Chicago theater awards were announced. He said I should’ve been at least nominated for my turn as Bonnie, the coked-out stripper in The Gift Theater’s production of Hurlyburly. I agreed, but that’s not the only reason I like Christopher Piatt. I like him because he’s a good writer, a smarty pants, and a lot of fun at a party. Now that he’s launched this new show — which seems to be going well and garnering buzz — there’s even one more reason to like him.
Chicago, if you haven’t noticed, is a really fantastic place to be if you’re a writer-performer. You’ve got all the original slam and poetry open mic stages, Too Much Light, The Dollar Store Show, the Drinking and Writing Brewery, The Encyclopedia Show, and any number of one-offs or salon-type events that come and go with a frequency. This is a good thing for those of us who make the art, sure, but it’s also great for those who want to see some. I urge you, even if you can’t make it to Paper Machete this Saturday at 3pm at Ricochets (it’s totally free, by the way!) to check out these other shows and take advantage of all the great writer-performer showcases offered in our fair city. There is a world of performance that isn’t quite theater, isn’t quite a “reading,” definitely isn’t a lecture, and will usually provoke thought, make you laugh, or piss you off. These are all good things.
So, to recap: This Saturday at 3pm, Paper Machete at Ricochets. Google it. It’s in Lincoln Square and I’ll be doing a piece about D.W. in the army, how it’s tough to be a not-so-liberal person in the arts in Chicago, and how Fox News may not be “fair and balanced,” but NPR ain’t, either. I may serve treats. I don’t know yet.
Come and find out!
Sorry to miss out- this sounds like a blast! I did forward it to a bunch of friends in Chicago that I think will have a great time. Take care!
